Nassau County Mathematics Teachers
“Congratulations Sandy Cohen on your induction to the New York State Association of Mathematics Supervisors. We miss you very much. She was a true leader, mentor and friend of NCMTA”
NCMTA is a NYSED Approved Sponsor of CTLE for Professional and Level III Teaching Assistant certificate holders.”
Welcome to Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association! In 1944 some very dedicated math teachers who wanted to foster a love of mathematics founded this organization. Their purpose then and our purpose now is still the same. We strive to “engage teachers, parents, and students in educational programs that lead to a greater understanding of and interest in mathematics.”
Over the years we have evolved and grown with the mathematical needs and concerns of teachers, parents, and students in Nassau County. We are a very involved professional organization. Our members volunteer their time by giving back to the professional community, sharing their knowledge and experience with new and seasoned teachers, and organizing events that challenge minds and improve mathematical practices. We have three or four Board Meetings a year and everyone is welcome to attend.
We are dedicated to getting more members involved, appreciating all input and new ideas. Please consider sharing your expertise and knowledge, whether you are a new or seasoned professional. Help us link new trends and educational insight to our professional community. The networking opportunities that you will discover through NCMTA are limitless. Professional growth is always important so we strive to offer quality programs that are current and meaningful to educators everywhere. Technology is paramount to many of our programs.
NCMTA is proud to announce that we have been approved by NYSED to be a provider of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) for Professional Development Requirements. Our yearly events continue to be well received with outstanding reviews. If you would like to learn about current trends in mathematics, look into our Kick-off Conference in October, our How To Make Math Count Conference in January, or the LIMACON Conference in March. Each of these conferences offers you the chance to see and hear about where mathematics is heading first hand. We are also always looking for people to present at these conferences. If you have a great idea or project that you would like to share with others, please consider volunteering and follow the links on our website.
If you are looking to meet people who share your interest in mathematics, any of the above mentioned conferences would suit you perfectly. Or, you might want to stop in and say “Hello” at one of our Socials. Our Socials give us all a chance to sit back and talk with one another about what we have ideas and questions about. It is a great support for everyone.
We also offer many activities for students. The Math Tournament in May is a competition for grades 4-6 where schools compete to solve problems. Our very popular Family Math Day is evolving with the times. We are very pleased to announce this year’s Family event as Brain STEAM Ahead, A Conference for Families. We will continue to follow the vision of Sandy Cohen with parents and children estimating at contests, exploring ideas in workshops, and winning prizes! It is always a wonderful event for all those who volunteer and participate.
In addition, it is important that we honor those in the field of mathematics who have gone above and beyond. This year the Hall of Fame Dinner will be held in November at the Long Island Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame. We are happy to be inducting six of the best Long Island has to offer. We also host a Spring Dinner in May for students and teachers who have shown a special talent with mathematics. If you know of anyone that you would like to nominate we are always looking for those who are outstanding in the field of Mathematics.
Please peruse our website for more details of our events. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please get involved or attend one of our events. All are invited and we are always looking for new volunteers and new ideas. Many hands are always needed to run our events. We have a great team and look forward to your participation.
